No doubt the number of casualties in the second wave was much higher than that of the first wave that came in the initial days of the year 2020. Now the third wave of covid is all set to hit the country.
Covid Third Wave India
The second wave of coronavirus has brought many countries to their knees throughout the world. Hence, as this third wave of covid is about to hit India soon, it is expected that the country will do all the necessary arrangements to combat it, getting a lesson from the other countries of the world.
The vaccination drive has already started in India. But it is still a matter of concern because the vaccination has been approved only for those above 18 years of age till now and the third wave of coronavirus is said to target the younger population this time.

The second wave of Covid started in March 2021 and now it is in declining state. Many experts have stated that it should end by July 2021 and have also mentioned the onset of the third wave in the coming few months. VK Saraswat, a member of Niti Aayog has mentioned an expected timeline for the third wave to approach the country. According to him, this third wave should hit the country by the month of September 2021 or latest by October 2021.
Saraswat has mentioned that the epidemiologists of India have warned that the third wave of coronavirus will enter India by the months of September-October and will be as severe as the second wave or even more. Hence, the Government of India should start making appropriate arrangements from now itself to tackle this upcoming disaster.

The third wave of coronavirus is expected to be even more severe than the second wave that came in March this year. Also, this wave is said to have a major impact on the young population of the country mostly. India has almost 50% of the total population under the age of 25. This will mean that 50% of the population will be extremely risked by the coming third wave.
Of course, the vaccination drive is on where the people of the age 18 or above are getting vaccinated. But the Government of India has still not decided about vaccinating those who are below 18 years of age.
As per the recent census, among 50% of the young population, 41% of the population is those who are of the age of 20 years or below. So, if the vaccination for the younger population does not start soon then it can get difficult to handle the situation when the third wave hits the country.

As the coronavirus is mutating, severe symptoms are showing up. In the first stage of Covid, fever, body pain, weakness, cough, and cold were the major symptoms. But this was soon followed by a loss of taste and smell. When the second wave of coronavirus attacked, there were many new symptoms that came up such as the faster spread of infection in the lungs, and many others.
The third wave of coronavirus is said to attack the children and the younger population of the country. It is still not confirmed whether there will be any enhanced symptoms again in this wave or not. But the experts are presuming some symptoms that children can have. These are:
- Fever, sore throat, cough, and cold as earlier
- Shortness of breath and chest pain
- Fatigue and myalgia that is a pain in joints, muscles, and ligaments
- Loss of smell and taste
- Rhinorrhea, that is excessive mucus from the nose
- Diarrhea and gastrointestinal issues
While the third wave is estimated to be deadly for the younger population, this does not mean that people of other age groups are safe. Everybody needs to take proper precautions and safety as it is still not confirmed how much impactful this third mutant of the coronavirus will be.
Duration of Covid Third Wave
Among all the scary warnings, there are speculations of the duration or till when this third mutant of the coronavirus can last. It has been estimated that the third wave will be shorter than the second wave of covid. The second wave of Covid lasted for 108 days. But it is being estimated that though the third wave of Covid will come with a strong thrust, it will last for 98 days, which is a bit lesser than the second wave.
A few weeks back, a total of 4lakhs covid infected cases were coming up daily in the country after the second wave hit India. But soon this started reducing and now it has come down to 1.3 lakh cases per day. It is estimated that this figure will keep on reducing, but the onset of the third wave can bring a vast jump in the number of recorded cases once again. Hence, during these three months of a grace period, the Government of India should not just speed up the vaccination process to cover up more people but also need to introduce the vaccination for those below 18 years too.
Expected Deaths in the Third Wave
The mortality rate in the third wave of coronavirus will entirely depend upon the policies and the steps taken by the Government of India. If the vaccination drive is sped up and the vaccination for children also starts then there is a high chance that the risk of the third wave mutant attacking the young population can lower down. Even if the mutant attacks anyone, especially the children or the young people after the second dose, then the illness will not be extremely serious and the need for hospitalization will be reduced.
According to the report by First Post, currently, the amount of serious cases in India is about 20%. But if the 20% of severe cases can be reduced to 5% with the help of rigorous vaccination and strong health infrastructure, then it can be estimated that the death figure due to the third wave can come down to 40,000. In the second wave, the death figure amount has crossed 0.17 million.
